Building reliable automated workflows is easy when every service is healthy. Building them to endure distributed downtime requires architectural discipline.
1. Idempotency at Every Node
Every workflow execution must be idempotent. If an API call fails after processing but before returning an acknowledgment, the retry must produce the exact same outcome without creating duplicate records.
- Generate unique deterministic execution IDs.
- Use transactional outbox patterns for event delivery.
- Implement exponential backoff with randomized jitter.
